If you've ever scrolled through skincare TikTok, you've probably seen claims about microcurrent facials, "lifted" cheekbones, or pores that look noticeably smaller after one session. The treatment behind most of these results is the galvanic facial — and it's been used by dermatologists for over 100 years.
At Avera Beauty in Southend, we're now licensed to offer Galvanic Facials in our ladies-only salon. This guide explains what the treatment actually does, what to expect, and who it suits best.
What Is a Galvanic Facial?
A galvanic facial uses a low-level direct electrical current to do two things:
1. **Deep cleanse** the skin by drawing out trapped oil, debris, and impurities from deep within the pores (a process called desincrustation).
2. **Push active skincare ingredients** further into the skin's deeper layers (iontophoresis) so they're more effective than topical application alone.
The current is so gentle you'll barely feel it. The treatment is non-invasive: no needles, no chemicals beyond standard facial products.
What Does the Treatment Involve?
A full galvanic facial at Avera includes:
**1. Skin consultation.** We assess your skin type, concerns, and any contraindications. The first appointment includes more time for this.
**2. Double cleanse.** Removes makeup, SPF, and surface debris.
**3. Exfoliation.** Light enzyme or AHA exfoliant to clear dead skin cells.
**4. Desincrustation.** A negatively-charged solution is applied, then the galvanic wand is moved across the skin. The negative current loosens hardened sebum and debris from pores.
**5. Iontophoresis.** A positively-charged serum (vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, or a tailored mix) is applied. The galvanic wand drives the active ingredients deeper into the skin.
**6. Mask and finishing.** A calming mask, then serum, moisturiser, and SPF.
Total treatment time: around 45-60 minutes.

How Often Should You Get One?
For lasting results, we recommend a course of 6 treatments at weekly or fortnightly intervals, then monthly maintenance. A one-off treatment gives a great immediate effect — but the deeper improvements come from repeated treatments over 6-8 weeks.

If you wear hijab, your appointment is one-on-one in a closed room with only female staff present.
