What Is a Galvanic Facial and Should You Try It?

What Is a Galvanic Facial and Should You Try It?

If you've ever scrolled through skincare TikTok, you've probably seen claims about microcurrent facials, "lifted" cheekbones, or pores that look noticeably smaller after one session. The treatment behind most of these results is the galvanic facial — and it's been used by dermatologists for over 100 years.

At Avera Beauty in Southend, we're now licensed to offer Galvanic Facials in our ladies-only salon. This guide explains what the treatment actually does, what to expect, and who it suits best.

What Is a Galvanic Facial?

A galvanic facial uses a low-level direct electrical current to do two things:

1. **Deep cleanse** the skin by drawing out trapped oil, debris, and impurities from deep within the pores (a process called desincrustation).

2. **Push active skincare ingredients** further into the skin's deeper layers (iontophoresis) so they're more effective than topical application alone.

The current is so gentle you'll barely feel it. The treatment is non-invasive: no needles, no chemicals beyond standard facial products.

What Does the Treatment Involve?

A full galvanic facial at Avera includes:

**1. Skin consultation.** We assess your skin type, concerns, and any contraindications. The first appointment includes more time for this.

**2. Double cleanse.** Removes makeup, SPF, and surface debris.

**3. Exfoliation.** Light enzyme or AHA exfoliant to clear dead skin cells.

**4. Desincrustation.** A negatively-charged solution is applied, then the galvanic wand is moved across the skin. The negative current loosens hardened sebum and debris from pores.

**5. Iontophoresis.** A positively-charged serum (vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, or a tailored mix) is applied. The galvanic wand drives the active ingredients deeper into the skin.

**6. Mask and finishing.** A calming mask, then serum, moisturiser, and SPF.

Total treatment time: around 45-60 minutes.

What Are the Benefits?

  • **Visible reduction in blackheads and congestion** — usually noticeable after a single session
  • **Brighter, more radiant skin** as dead cells are cleared
  • **Improved product absorption** — serums work harder for longer
  • **Smoother skin texture** with consistent use
  • **Pores look tighter** (they don't actually shrink, but they look smaller when clear)
  • **Anti-ageing effects** when combined with the right active ingredients
  • **No downtime** — back to normal life immediately, including makeup
  • Who Are Galvanic Facials Good For?

Galvanic facials are particularly effective for:

  • Combination or oily skin with visible congestion or blackheads
  • Dull, tired skin lacking radiance
  • Skin in its 30s and 40s showing early signs of ageing
  • Anyone using actives (retinol, vitamin C) who wants better absorption
  • Special occasion prep — book 5-7 days before for a clear, glowing finish
  • Who Should NOT Have a Galvanic Facial?

We don't perform galvanic facials if you:

  • Have a pacemaker, defibrillator, or other electrical implant
  • Have metal pins or plates in the face/neck area
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have active acne breakouts, broken skin, or sunburn in the treatment area
  • Have epilepsy
  • Have recent injectable, laser, or chemical peel treatments
  • How Often Should You Get One?

For lasting results, we recommend a course of 6 treatments at weekly or fortnightly intervals, then monthly maintenance. A one-off treatment gives a great immediate effect — but the deeper improvements come from repeated treatments over 6-8 weeks.

    What's It Like at Avera?

Every Galvanic Facial at Avera is delivered in a private treatment room by a fully qualified female therapist. We're licensed by Southend-on-Sea City Council for electric facial treatments (Code of Practice 6) — this isn't a treatment many salons in Southend can legally offer.

If you wear hijab, your appointment is one-on-one in a closed room with only female staff present.

Book online via Fresha or call 01702 316427. We're at 8 West Street, Southend-on-Sea.
